Hmm...It
seems we have a little competition for the Steelpad.
Which is a better gaming surface, aluminum or glass?
Let's start with the dimensions. The IceMat measures
a simple 8.27" x 9.84" (210 mm x 250 mm).
The IceMat seems to have a slightly smaller surface
area, but not by much.
Because it's made of glass the IceMat is considerably
thicker than the Steelpad, which makes wrist fatigue
a small issue. As
you can see from the picture below, the IceMat is
more than double the thickness. Along with the non-slip
feet, the IceMat has a definite height clearance to
be dealt with. A simple wrist pad would help relieve
the stress on the wrist while gaming. An easy solution
to a simple problem.

Thickness...a
problem?

The
box for the IceMat is definitely better than the Steelpad.
The IceMat was protected with styrofoam in a sturdy
cardboard box, unlike the flimsy envelope-style package
the Steelpad was housed in. The IceMat also comes
with the much needed padsurfers. Simple strips of
teflon tape on your mouse feet does wonders for a
smooth contact with the pad. It also helps dust from
accumulating on your mouse. This prevents choppy movements,
which can mean being getting a head shot or completely
missing.

As
you can see below, the Steelpad is larger but it does
not seem like a significant amount of space

The
IceMat

As
with the Steelpad some of the older model optical
mice do not work with the IceMat. But the surface
is still extremely smooth and beautifully crafted.
In addition to the nice surface, because it's glass,
dust does not adhere to it as easily as on the Steelpad.
One
thing that the IceMat has an advantage over the Steelpad
is that it makes less noise. When using the Steelpad,
the mouse movements make a unique metal scraping sound,
whereas, movements on the IceMat are was quiet as
ice on ice.
Verdict
This mousepad excels. It is quiet, smooth, large,
and not too pricy. You definitely get more for your
money with the IceMat. The only drawback is the thickness.
Initially, it's not a problem, but extensive play
time and use increases wrist fatigue. Long term effects
= carpal tunnel. Easily fixed with a cheap wrist pad.
Looks like glass has a slight edge over metal.
