hmm... sleek aluminum mouse pad in black

Upon opening to package, you would find nothing but the Steelpad 3S itself with some teflon tape attached to the back of it. The teflon tape attached allows you to cover the feet of your mouse to provide a better contact. The Steelpad 3S measures 9.84" x 9.45" x .14" (thickness). It is made of aluminum with a specially treated surface and hardended to ensure durability. It looks a little like a piece of anodized aluminum which is quick thick comparing to most modern computer cases. It is also the hardest mouse pad I have ever come across so far. The surface is matte black, and I had a hard time getting my camera to actually auto focus on it. I hope the pictures below would give you a better sense what it looks like.

According to official release, the post treatment consists of fiber polishing of the edges, and a cleansing process. It is interesting to note that the 3S is incompatible with a mainstream pre-MX series of logitech mice.

Let's be fair here, everyone is subject to his or her own view on what's the "right touch" when it comes to mousing. I believe the Steelpad provides the right amount of friction and allows my mouse to pick up enough signal to react to my hand movement. It allows my mouse to stop where I want it to, which is one critical aspect for FPS gamers.

The downside to all the advantages mentioned above, moving your mouse over the Steelpad does make a little noise 'cause it is after all made of metal. The noise level is significantly less the what the Everglide mouse pads produce. It is cold to touch, which again is a subjective gray area. It also does not work with Logitech Optical mice other than the MX Series.

ketchup and fries?

I have personally owned about 15 computer mice and 20 mouse pads at this point of my life. From the cheapest ¢25 cloth mouse pads, to the 3M precision, and even the EverGlide pads. Each of those have their ups and downs. Some are too smooth, some are not responsive enough, and some might not have the right surface to give me the right touch. The Steelpad 3S simply put a period to my endless quest in search of the right mouse pad.

Verdict
To be honest with you, a perfect mouse pad is priceless to me consider the amount of time I spend laying my right hand on a pointing device. The Steelpad 3S is sleek, beautifully designed, and works like a charm. For $25.00, the Steelpad 3S is, without a doubt, the absolute best choice there is on the market.

*At press time, the Steelpad is available in North America only at www.team3d.net. If you want one, I'm afraid you'd have to wait or order it directly from Denmark at Steelpad.com
