Logitech Mouse LED Replacement Guide

Before we start, please be advised that we are not be responsible for any injuries or damage you may do to your mouse during the mod. Opening the mouse, like most other computer components, may void the warranty and shorten the life of it.

Also, we are assuming that you have basic knowledge and experience with a soldering. If not, you might want to turn to a soldering guide and experiment a little with something you don't mind breaking before you proceed.

Ok, enough of that... Let's take a look at our recipe ;)

  • Logitech Wheel Mouse Optical (you may replace with other mice. Procedure may differ, but the principle is the same)
  • Screw driver
  • Soldering Iron (one with a small tip would be ideal)
  • Solder
  • LED (we used the 5mm ones from http://www.exabytesystems.com, they carry a nice variety of LEDs with colors and different brightness)
  • Pliers

hmm... dissection..

Now, the first step is to grab your screw driver and open up the mouse. There is only 1 screw holding up the upper half of the mouse to the lower part along with the core. Turn it upside down, and you should have no problem locating it. . There are two tabs near the buttons which hold the top together. Just lift it up from the other end, and don't force it to open. Unscrew it, turn it face up, and lift the top. If you don't have the springs and wheel falling apart, congratulations you're done with the first step.

set the wheel and springs aside

Next, you'll simply lift the wheel along with the springs from the circuit board. Be gentle, and remember how they're placed. It's ok if they fall apart, but you gotta remember how to put them back together... Find a nice place to put it aside, and don't let your cat or dog eat it. :)

lifting the circuit board

Next, lift the USB cord and gently lift the board from where the index finger points to on the left. Note that the scroll wheel that appears on the left shouldn't be there at this point... if it's still sitting there when you lift the board, you might end up having the springs and wheel flying around and end up losing them.

Next, we'll be working with the circuit board, and that's where the fun part begins.
